Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects sagging or droopy eyelids. Drooping lids tend to occur in mature adults. The condition is caused by excess tissue buildup, the loss of skin support and a decrease in the amount of collagen produced. Fine lines and wrinkles often cover the surface of drooping skin. The condition can actually impair vision, especially if the upper lid is sagging over the front of the eyeball.
A blepharoplasty procedure is much like a mini facelift. The skin is pulled upward or downward, and an excess strip of the skin is removed. We strongly recommend a consultation before deciding on this procedure. It’s important for our plastic surgeon to examine the eyelids closely so that the reason for the sagging can be determined.
Candidates for Blepharoplasty
Sagging eyelids can make you look much older than you really are. The droopy lids also create shadow zones that give your face a darker, stern appearance. However, corrective surgery is not for everyone.
Generally, ideal candidates for blepharoplasty include those who suffer from droopy lower eyelids that cause an increased amount of eye white to show, those who have sagging upper lids caused by a buildup of fatty tissue beneath the skin and individuals who are having their vision – especially their peripheral vision – obscured. Bags under the lower lids can also be corrected with blepharoplasty.
How the Procedure is Performed
If the problem is the upper eyelid, the surgeon removes fatty tissue using a special instrument. In rare cases, a small amount of muscle tissue is repositioned or removed. If the lower lid is being treated, the skin is pulled upward with the excess removed. Of course, the exact details of the procedure will vary from patient to patient, as each person’s condition is unique.
Long-Lasting Results
After you have fully recovered, the eyelids will not only be firmer and sag less, but the puffiness will also be greatly diminished. The overall appearance will be significantly improved, and the results often last for many years.
