Hand Surgery
The hand is an intricate maze consisting of 27 bones and numerous nerves, arteries, veins, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Pain in the fingers, hand, wrist, or arm are indicators that an evaluation is recommended. Any cut or laceration, which may require stitches to repair, warrants a medical evaluation. The goal with hand surgery is a rapid and accurate initial evaluation and treatment so that the long-term disabilities to the hand can be minimized.
Not every evaluation will result in a surgical procedure. Non-surgical treatment options, including hand therapy, are often recommended to restore movement and significantly reduce or end the pain.
Carpal Tunnel Release
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a painful affliction that can be a result of repetitive hand movements. Symptoms include varying degrees of pain and tingling in the fingers, hand and wrist. Advancing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome often leads to an overall weakness in the hand that results in loss of grip.
In order to avoid long-term damage, Carpel Tunnel Release is often recommended. It is a simple procedure wherein pressure on the median nerve is relieved with a small incision.
Trigger Finger Release
Trigger finger is a common problem that results in a locking of the finger due to tightening of the tendons and is exacerbated by the vicious cycle of swelling and locking that follows. The goal of treatment in trigger finger (or thumb,) is to eliminate the catching or locking and allow full movement of the finger or thumb without discomfort. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia in the office and usually takes a few minutes.
Ganglion Cysts
Ganglion cysts are common masses that appear under the skin on the hand or wrist. They do not require treatment, but if they are painful or interfere with hand function, then treatment is recommended and can take one of two courses. Those options are either a simple, non–surgical aspiration or a surgical procedure that removes the cyst as well as the root of the ganglion.
