Do you look in the mirror and think, “Who is that?” It’s common as we age, because we lose collagen in our skin – an essential component to young, healthy looking skin. But, as collagen deteriorates, so does the quality of our skin. Wrinkles develop around the chin, mouth, nose, and eyes. We lose volume in our cheeks, around our eyes, and in our lips. Even though we may feel young and full of vitality, we may not look it. Dermal fillers can help combat these issues.
If you are looking to have an injectable filler in Princeton, such as Botox, Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse, or Bellafill, Dr. Adam Hamawy is a board certified plastic surgeon who can safely perform the treatment. Contact our office in Princeton, NJ to request a consultation.
About Dermal Fillers
Non-surgical injectable shaping agents can help eliminate some facial wrinkles and slow down the development of new ones.
Injectable fillers help restore a youthful appearance by replacing volume to your face that has depleted with age.
Fillers are injected by a doctor to raise the sunken area or wrinkles to the same level as the skin next to it. There are many commercial fillers available today, as well as your own fat that can be used for natural volume.
Dermal fillers are most commonly used to treat static lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth, including nasolabial folds marionette lines, and vertical lip lines. They are also commonly used to add volume to the cheeks, improve the appearance of scars, and to augment the lips. Dr. Hamawy also uses dermal fillers to help rejuvenate the backs of the hands if they have lost volume. Some less common uses for dermal fillers that Dr. Hamawy offers include nonsurgical rhinoplasty and chin augmentation.
Our New Jersey patients love dermal fillers because they’re not only effective, but it’s a quick procedure that delivers fast results. There is no need for surgery or to commit to a long-term change. Patients are usually in and out of our office within half an hour and results begin to appear within a couple days and improve over the course of two weeks.

Dermal Filler Products
At Princeton Plastic Surgery, we are proud to offer a variety of dermal fillers to meet our patient’s needs. All of the dermal fillers that we offer are very safe, with minimum chance for adverse reaction.
- Restylane: Restylane is a family of hyaluronic acid fillers, a biodegradable gel based on natural substance. It is used to treat nasolabial folds that extend from the nose to the corners of the mouth, marionette lines that extend from the corners of the mouth down to the jawline, and vertical lip lines. It can also be used to temporarily augment the lips. In general, the results typically last 6-9 months.
- Juvéderm: Juvéderm is another popular family of hyaluronic acid fillers. It can be used to treat all of the same concerns as Restylane, as well as adding volume to the cheeks. The results last from 6-18 months, depending on the formula. We also recently began carrying Juvéderm Volbella XC, which was found to effectively increase lip fullness and soften the appearance of lines around the mouth in a majority of patients through one year.
- Radiesse: Radiesse is a calcium hydroxylapatite based filler with smooth injectable microspheres. It works by not only providing volume in the short term, but also promoting collagen growth for long term results. It is primarily used to correct the appearance of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and also rejuvenate the backs of the hands. Results last up to a year or more.
- Bellafill: Bellafill is a polymethylmethacrylate collagen filler. It is used to treat nasolabial folds around the nose and mouth and is also approved for scar correction. It is currently the longest lasting dermal filler on the market, with results lasting up to five years.
Healthy women and men who are concerned about volume loss and static wrinkles on their face may be good candidates for dermal fillers. We offer a variety of dermal fillers help you improve the contour of your face, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and even rejuvenate your hands either temporarily or long-term.
Prior to scheduling your dermal fillers appointment, it is important that you understand what can and cannot be accomplished from dermal fillers. Dermal fillers cannot permanently remove lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers are also not good options for treating dynamic lines and wrinkles that usually form around the forehead and eyes, which are better treated with a neuromodulator like Botox. However, dermal fillers can temporarily reduce the appearance of these concerns. Dr. Hamawy will be able to provide you with “Before & After” photographs to give you realistic expectations for the outcome of the treatment.

Botox / Xeomin / Dysport
Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport are all neuromodulators comprised of Botulinum toxin, which temporarily suspends nerve impulse communication with muscles in the face. They are primarily used to soften lines around the nose and mouth, including horizontal forehead lines, glabellar lines, and crow’s feet. These are all lines that are created by repeated muscle contractions.
Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport do not treat the same facial concerns as dermal fillers. Neuromodulators relax muscles to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, while dermal fillers add volume and soften deep creases. However, they are both nonsurgical and easily injected in a matter of minutes. For these reasons, many of our patients choose to have their dermal filler and neuromodulator treatment at the same time. Combining these treatments is both safe and effective.
Facial Fat Transfer
A facial fat transfer is a three-step procedure where we use liposuction to harvest fat cells from the body, purify the cells, then inject them into the face to add volume and soften wrinkles. It is injected in a similar way to dermal fillers. The fat can be harvested from anywhere on the body where you have an excess amount, including the arms, abdomen, flanks, and thighs. This procedure has the added benefit of allowing you to sculpt your body, while simultaneously improving the contour of your face.
In general, a fat transfer is a long-lasting procedure as long as the patient maintains a healthy and stable body weight. However, it will require 1-3 days of downtime following the procedure. The procedure will also take longer than a dermal fillers treatment. Dr. Hamawy can help you decide if dermal fillers or a facial fat transfer are right for you.
During your first visit, Dr. Hamawy will ask you about your desired results. This will help him understand your expectations and let you know if they can be realistically accomplished. Dr. Hamawy will analyze your face and may also recommend other non-invasive procedures such as Botox or Dysport to achieve your goals. After your consultation, photographs will be taken for your medical records and additional analysis.
Most patients who are healthy are good candidates. You will be asked about any conditions that may complicate the procedure. It is important for you to provide complete information. If you have any allergies or a medical condition please inform the doctor.
The procedure takes 15 to 30 minutes and is performed in our office conveniently located in Princeton.
Depending on the location and quantity to be injected, the area will be numbed with topical or local anesthesia. The selected filler is precisely injected into the target areas on your face using a fine needle. There is usually a minor sting that disappears after a few seconds and no discomfort after the procedure is complete. Most people can immediately return to normal activities.
Recovery / Results
Following the procedure, you may experience some swelling and, rarely, bruising. However, you are free to return to your normal routine. If there is any redness around the injection sites, you are free to cover it up with a light, mineral makeup. Be sure to avoid direct sunlight.
The results of the injections usually take about 2 to 3 days before they are fully apparent. It is important to remember that dermal fillers are a temporary anti-aging treatment.
If you want to maintain your results, then you should schedule touch-up appointments at the time of your initial procedure. While there is no harm in scheduling the appointments later, it is best to save your spot so that you don’t have to go long without the fillers.
You must pay for the procedure prior to injection. Cost depends on the number of treatment areas to be injected and how many units you require. Insurance will not cover elective procedures. However, we do offer financing plans through CareCredit and Prosper Healthcare Lending. If you wish to learn more about financing, click here or ask about it at the time of your consultation.
