Breast enhancement can be achieved without implants by transferring your own fat from your abdomen, waist or thighs, giving you a slimmer figure and larger bust. Fat is collected from unwanted areas with similar methods used in liposuction, and purified before it is injected into the breast tissue to achieve the size and natural shape that you desire. Fat transfer breast augmentation is ideal because it requires minimal downtime and produces minimal scarring.
Natural autologous fat breast augmentation may be a good option for you depending on your lifestyle and goals. An understanding of the alternatives, risks, and the limitations of this technique is important in making a decision that is right for you.
Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation Technique
For many women who have breasts that have deflated due to childbirth or age, fat can be transferred directly to the breast tissue. However, others who have naturally small and tight breasts may require preparation with an external expansion device that is worn below the clothes, over the chest. This allows the skin to stretch and prepares the breast to receive and support the fat that will be transferred. Fat is collected using liposuction and then carefully handled and prepared to maximize fat survival, as well as preserve stem cells and any other beneficial growth factors that may be present. This is then injected using small needles around the breast area. Recovery is similar to any liposuction procedure and patients usually go home the same day. There is minimal to no scarring and results often appear and feel very natural.
Fat is collected using a similar technique that we use in liposuction but will be carefully handled and prepared to preserve all the fat cells and any other beneficial growth factors that may be present. The purified fat will then transferred to the breasts using small needles without leaving any extra incisions or scars. Recovery is similar to what you may experience if you had liposuction and you can expect to go home the same day. You may have some mild discomfort and swelling following surgery. When you are discharged, you will be given prescriptions to help keep you comfortable. A compression help minimize swelling and speed recovery. Plan on having limited ability to exercise for up to three weeks.
Your visit with Dr. Hamawy will determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. If you are in good physical health and you are seeking natural-appearing breast enlargement, then a fat graft breast augmentation may be a good choice for you.
Since healthy blood vessels are important for fat graft survival and adequate healing, fat transfer breast augmentation is not usually recommended for women who smoke. Before you decide on what type of surgery you want, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with Dr. Hamawy.
During your first visit, board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Hamawy will examine you and determine your general health. Be prepared to discuss your medical history, including any medical conditions, allergies, treatments you have received, prior surgeries including breast biopsies, and any medications that you currently take. It is important for you to provide complete information. Dr. Hamawy is concerned about your health and safety and, depending on your medical status, may ask for additional evaluations before proceeding with surgery.
You will learn about the procedure, its limitations and risks, and have an opportunity to discuss your needs and concerns. Dr. Hamawy will explain all of your options for breast augmentation, including breast implants, and the risks and benefits of each procedure. After the discussion, you should be able to decide together which surgical techniques are the most appropriate for you based on your desires, your physical limitations and the condition of your breasts. He will examine your body and will consider such factors as the quality of your skin tone and the contour and fat distribution over your body.
The Day Of Surgery
Before surgery, you will be given medicine to lessen the anxiety and pain. General or twilight anesthesia are typically used, so you will be aware during your procedure. You will meet your anesthesiologist before your procedure and he or she will answer any questions you may have about your anesthesia. The surgery usually takes 2-4 hours depending on the amount of fat to be harvested and transferred. After surgery, you will awake in the recovery area, where you will be closely monitored before being discharged home the same day.
You will have some mild discomfort or pain following surgery. When you are discharged, you will be given prescriptions for pain medication in case you need it. A compression garment will also be worn over the areas that were liposuctioned. Plan on having limited physical activity, including exercise, for up to three weeks.
Your follow-up visits will usually start one week following your surgery. During your postoperative visits, Dr. Hamawy will review activity limitations, incision care and any concerns you may have. Following this visit, you will return three weeks to three months later, depending on your unique situation. Be assured that your relationship with Dr. Hamawy does not end after your surgery. If you have any concerns during your recovery, or have more questions at a later time, you can always contact Dr. Hamawy.
