Breast enhancement can be achieved without implants by transferring your own fat from your abdomen, waist or thighs, giving you a slimmer figure and larger bust. Fat is collected from unwanted areas with similar methods used in liposuction and purified before it is injected into the breast tissue to achieve the size and natural shape that you desire. Fat transfer breast augmentation is ideal for many women because it requires minimal downtime and produces no scarring to the breasts.
Natural autologous fat breast augmentation may be a good option for you depending on your lifestyle and goals. An understanding of the alternatives, risks, and the limitations of this technique is important in making a decision that is right for you.

About Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation
Fat transfer breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that consists of removing fat from a region of the body and placing it into the breasts. This natural augmentation allows you to enhance the size, shape, and symmetry of your breasts without the use of implants or other synthetic materials. Often after large weight fluctuations or breastfeeding, your breasts tend to lose volume. In other cases, your breasts may be smaller in size as a result of the natural development process, or you may have had previous health conditions that required a mastectomy procedure. Regardless of the reason, this natural breast augmentation can provide the enhancement that you desire.
The surgery is performed through a three-step treatment process in which the fat is extracted from an area of the body such as the flanks or thighs, put through a purification process, and then injected into the breasts to provide natural looking enhancement. In certain cases, Dr. Hamawy will also combine a fat transfer procedure with a traditional breast augmentation. By doing so, the breasts will be enlarged to the desired shape and size and the fat transfer injections will be placed around the implant to help achieve a more natural breast contour.
Fat transfer breast augmentation can provide you with extremely satisfying results and long-term benefits. Some of these benefits include:
- Natural breast augmentation
- Improvement in the way clothes fit
- The safest form of surgical breast enhancement
- Noticeable increase in size and improved shape of breasts
- On average, patients retain about 80% of the fat that has been injected
- Removal of fat from one location on the body provides added body contouring
- No incisions needed on the breasts because the fat is instead injected through a syringe
Your visit with Dr. Hamawy will determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. If you are in good physical health and you are seeking natural-appearing breast enlargement, then a fat graft breast augmentation may be a good choice for you.
Since healthy blood vessels are important for fat graft survival and adequate healing, fat transfer breast augmentation is not usually recommended for women who smoke. Before you decide on what treatment option is right for you, you should think carefully about your expectations. Any questions or concerns can be discussed in detail with Dr. Hamawy.
During your first visit, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Hamawy will perform an examination and determine your general health. Be prepared to discuss your medical history, including any medical conditions, allergies, treatments you have received, prior surgeries including breast biopsies, and any medications that you currently take. It is important for you to provide complete information to Dr. Hamawy so that he has an understanding about your health and can recommend the safest treatment option for you, depending on your medical status.
You will learn about the procedure, its limitations, and risks, and have an opportunity to discuss your needs and concerns. Dr. Hamawy will explain all of your options for breast augmentation, including breast implants, and the risks and benefits of each procedure.
At Princeton Plastic Surgery, we use Vectra 3D imaging to help you choose the breast augmentation procedure that is best for you and your body type. This technology takes a scan of your body and allows you to see a 3D image of what your results will look like before your surgery.
After seeing your results with Vectra 3D Imaging, you and Dr. Hamawy can decide together which surgical techniques are the most appropriate for you based on your desires, your physical limitations and the condition of your breasts. He will examine your body and will consider such factors as the quality of your skin tone and the contour and fat distribution on your body.
For many women who have breasts that have deflated due to childbirth or age, fat can be transferred directly to the breast tissue. However, others who have naturally small and tight breasts may require preparation with an external expansion device that is worn below the clothes, over the chest. This allows the skin to stretch and prepares the breast to receive and support the fat that will be transferred.
The Day Of Surgery
The fat transfer breast augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis under either general or twilight anesthesia, depending on what you and Dr. Hamawy decide. Just before beginning the procedure, you will meet with our certified anesthesiologist, and he or she will answer any questions you may have about your anesthesia. The surgery usually takes about 2-4 hours to perform, depending on the amount of fat to be harvested and transferred.
Fat is collected using liposuction and then carefully handled and prepared to maximize fat survival, as well as preserve stem cells and any other beneficial growth factors that may be present. It is then injected using small needles around the breast area. This process will be repeated until the doctor has achieved your desired results. Recovery is similar to any liposuction procedure, and you can usually go home the same day. There is minimal to no scarring and results often appear and feel very natural.
Once your procedure is complete, you will be escorted to our recovery area before being released home. It is expected that you will have some mild discomfort or pain following surgery, this is normal. You may also experience swelling and bruising to the treated areas; however, this is normal and will subside on its own within a few days after the procedure. Before leaving our office, Dr. Hamawy will provide you with a prescription for pain medication to help alleviate any discomfort if needed. A sports bra or surgical bra should be worn continuously throughout the recovery period, unless otherwise stated by the doctor, to ensure that a substantial amount of fat cells remain in the breasts. Also, you will be asked to wear a compression garment around the liposuctions regions of the body to help with any post-operative symptoms.
After your surgery, plan on having limited physical activity, including exercise and other strenuous movements, for up to three weeks. Daily activities can be resumed after about 3-5 days. It is important to not put too much pressure on the breasts during the initial recovery stage to ensure the injected fat cells establish a new blood supply in the breasts. Additionally, Dr. Hamawy recommends that during your post-op period you should eat well and maintain your current weight.
This will help the transferred fat to survive in the breasts and allow the largest number of cells to establish a new blood supply. You should be eating fully balanced meals for, at least, the first month after your fat transfer procedure. Your follow-up visits will usually start one week following your surgery. During your postoperative visits, Dr. Hamawy will review activity limitations, incision care and any concerns you may have. Following this visit, you will return anywhere between three weeks to three months later, depending on your unique situation. This will allow the doctor to monitor the healing process and ensure a steady recovery. Be assured that your relationship with Dr. Hamawy does not end after your surgery.
If you have any concerns during your recovery or have more questions at a later time, you can always contact Dr. Hamawy and our helpful staff here at Princeton Plastic Surgeons.
The cost of the fat transfer breast augmentation is highly individualistic. The price will vary from patient to patient depending on your particular case and the extent of treatment you require.
