About Hair Follicles

Men and women have a total of out about 90,000 – 110,000 hair follicles, and we are born with them all. When we get older, it is common to naturally shed about 60 – 80 hairs every day. This is not what causes visible hair loss though, as the follicles are still active and will regrow new hair. Hair grows in different stages: anagen, catagen, and telogen.

Anagen is the growth phase; about 85% – 90% of the hair follicles enter this stage at a time. This phase lasts anywhere between 2 – 8 years. Catagen is the regression phase. This is when something signals hair follicles on the scalp to detach and adhere to the shaft of the hair, becoming a club hair. The origin of the signal is not known, but this action cuts the blood supply. This last about 2 weeks. Telogen is the rest phase, where club hairs are subject to falling from the scalp. This cycle is then repeated.

Why Do We Lose Hair?

Over the years, hair follicles can become less active or inactive altogether, reducing hair growth to a point of visibility. It is calculated that about 90 million men and women suffer from some degree of hair loss every year. Some known causes for hair loss include:

  • Heredity
  • Androgenetic alopecia
  • Dihydrotestosterone
  • Anemia
  • Stress
  • Changes in hormone levels
  • Medication
  • Pregnancy
  • Tight hair styles

Male Pattern Hair Loss Vs Female Pattern Hair Loss

Men and women lose their hair in different patterns. Male pattern hair loss can be seen near the front of the scalp as a receding hairline, as well as loss in the crown area. Continuous recession is categorized as balding. The onset of male pattern hair loss is common around the age of 30, often triggered by DHT, or dihydrotestosterone. This is a hormone that deteriorates hair cells. PRP hair restoration can stimulate hair follicles and promote natural hair growth. Female pattern hair loss doesn’t tend to be as visible as male hair loss because it presents more as evenly spread thinning hair. PRP can be injected into the thinning areas to stimulate hair growth.

What Is PRP?

PRP is the abbreviation for platelet rich plasma, a vital component in our blood. The plasma portion of our blood gives home to regenerative cells and platelets, as well as important proteins and growth factors. PRP aids in rejuvenation and regenerative purposes, but when separated from the rest of blood’s components, its potency skyrockets.

To separate and isolate PRP from the mixture of other cells and fluids, a sample of blood is placed in a device called a centrifuge. The centrifugation system spins the sample of blood at an extremely high velocity, forcing separation of the particulates and leaving platelet rich plasma isolated for easy extraction.

Once extracted, PRP can be used in many different cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries, one of the most common being hair restoration. Specific cells in PRP that are ideal for hair growth include PDGF (platelet-derived growth factor), FGF-2 (fibroblast growth factor), TGF-b (transforming growth factor-beta), and VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor.)

Ideal Candidates Fpr PRP Hair Restoration

PRP is a great choice for men and women looking for a non-surgical solution for hair restoration. The best candidates for PRP hair restoration are men and women who are in the more early stages of hair thinning or hair loss. This is because the follicles are still somewhat active but they are not generating desired hair growth. However, patients with inactive follicles can be candidates as well, more treatments will be required though to stimulate their activity.

Patients should be healthy and have realistic expectations of what the procedure can accomplish. Those with low platelet counts or clotting conditions may not be suitable for the treatment. Other contraindications include smoking and unstable blood pressure. Feel free to contact us today at either our Princeton, New Jersey or Wayne, New Jersey location to request a PRP hair restoration consultation examination with Dr. Hamawy and see if you are a candidate for this transformational treatment.

Benefits

  • Non-surgical
  • Quick, in-office treatment
  • No adverse reaction since the treatment uses material from the patient’s own body
  • PRP will also speed along the healing process
  • PRP can be added to a Neograft hair transplant treatment for patients who would not benefit from PRP hair restoration solely.

The Treatment Process

The treatment takes about 30 minutes to an hour to complete, with majority of the time taken for the prep phase. Many patients listen to music, watch TV, or read a book to pass the time since they remain awake for the treatment duration. There is little to no discomfort during this in-office treatment. A topical or local anesthetic can be used for added patient comfort.

By Itself

To begin the treatment, a blood sample will be drawn and placed in the centrifuge. The PRP is then extracted from the blood and injected directly into the areas of the scalp where hair growth is desired. Once the treatment is completed, the patient’s hair will be washed and they are able to return to their normal routine without interruption or downtime.

With NeoGraft Follicular Unit Extraction

Neograft is an advanced hair restoration technique that uses follicular-unit extraction to transplant hair follicles. Each follicle is individually harvested from the donor location with a small tool. 1,000 – 2,000 follicles can be harvested in a single sitting, with a potential 1 – 4 hairs per follicle. The follicles are then transplanted into the created recipient sites in the pattern of a natural hairline or anywhere there is hair loss. Neograft does not require incisions or scalpels for the transplant process. PRP can come into play during a Neograft treatment to heighten results. It can either be sprayed, dripped, or painted onto the recipient site, aiding in the natural healing and regenerative process.

Treatment Areas

PRP hair restoration can be used for both the scalp and the eyebrows. The scalp is the more popular of the two areas, but people may want to restore eyebrows that have been over plucked as a result of a past trend or have fallen out due to a medical condition. Not everyone is a suitable candidate for this treatment so an initial consult with Dr. Hamawy is necessary to see if this is the right treatment for a patient, as well as the areas suitable for treatment.

Hair Restoration Recovery & Results

There is no downtime necessary after PRP hair restoration treatment. Initial swelling and redness can occur for some but dissipates rapidly. It is recommended that patients take it easy the first couple of days, avoiding vigorous activity. PRP will help speed up the healing process as well. No stitches are used in the restoration process so there is no resulting scarring. Patients will return to one of our New Jersey locations about every 3 months so Dr. Hamawy can measure improvement.

Individual results will vary because the treatment uses product from their own body. Generally it takes about 6 months for visible results to be enjoyed, but multiple treatments may be necessary for optimal results. It is possible for patients to have fuller hair and stronger follicles for the rest of their lives so long as the follicles are stimulated from the treatment.

Additional PRP Treatments

Hair restoration is not the only viable cosmetic treatment for platelet rich plasma. PRP can also be used for cosmetic treatments such as a vampire facial. This clever name describes the combination of a microneedling session with PRP application. Once the microchannels have been created in the skin with the microneedling pen, Dr. Hamawy will paint the PRP onto the skin. The microchannels will absorb the PRP, initiating a quicker healing response and greater collagen induction.

To learn more about the many applications of PRP, please feel free to contact our office today and one of our experienced staff members will gladly assist you in finding the appropriate treatment for you.

Your Consultation

A PRP hair restoration consultation examination with Dr. Adam Hamawy is necessary before undergoing treatments. He must make sure that you are a suitable candidate for this particular treatment, or suggest an alternative treatment that may be better suited such as Neograft. Once it is determined that you are a good candidate, a personalized treatment plan will be created for your case. Please share medical history and past surgeries and treatments as these are important for the treatment plan. Photos will be taken at this time to notate the starting point and continuous improvement.

Cost will also be discussed at this time. The cost of PRP hair restoration is based on the extent of the case and is unique to each patient. An estimation will be provided after the examination. It is at that time Dr. Hamawy will be able to determine the treatment sites and the number of treatments necessary to reach optimal results.
