Kybella

Struggling to get rid of chin fat through diet and exercise? You’re not alone.

Fat in this area can be nearly impossible to eliminate through diet and exercise alone. Liposuction treatments offer patients an alternative to traditional methods; however, you may be like many other patients who are nervous about having a procedure, even if it is minor. Kybella® is a revolutionary injectable alternative to liposuction for patients interested in getting rid of submental (chin and neck) fat without surgery or downtime.

Kybella is just a small part of Princeton Plastic Surgeons’ commitment to providing patients comprehensive treatment options that address each patient’s individual concerns. Contact us today to schedule a consultation appointment and find out if this treatment would be suitable for you.

What Is Kybella?

Kybella is the first and only injectable treatment that is FDA approved to reduce excess fat under the chin. Also referred to as submental fullness, this fat can be particularly frustrating to get rid of. It’s also great for other small areas of fatty deposits above the bra and underarm area, knees and cellulite. Before Kybella, the only alternative to unresponsive diet and exercise was surgical liposuction; now, women and men can get rid of this stubborn fat through a simple injectable treatment that takes minutes to complete.

It should be noted that this treatment is not a substitution for weight loss but rather an effective method to resolve the issue of excess fat under the chin or other small areas that will not diminish through diet and exercise.

By reducing the fullness underneath the chin, the overall contour and structure of the face and neck are improved. This will ultimately provide a younger and more aesthetically pleasing look, leaving you feeling more confident and with a better self-image.

How Does Kybella Work?

The secret to Kybella’s widespread success is a simple molecule that is naturally present in the human body: deoxycholic acid. When deoxycholic acid is produced within the body, it helps break down and absorb dietary fat. So when a condensed amount is injected underneath into a fatty area, it works in much the same way: the deoxycholic acid breaks down fat cells and aids in naturally expelling them from the body.

While traditional weight loss only shrinks the size of pre-existing fat cells, Kybella destroys them entirely. This helps decrease your ability to regain fat in the chin, neck, or other small areas so you can enjoy a defined, youthful-looking profile for years.

What Can I Expect from Treatment?

Kybella treatments are not painful, taking only a short 15 minutes to complete. You can opt for a local anesthetic to help ensure comfort. Multiple injections will be administered under the chin and down the neck in such a way that the molecules reach the majority of fat cells causing the double chin appearance.

Similar injection is performed in other areas. Most patients see optimal results within 2-4 treatment sessions. While there is a brief period of swelling following each injection appointment, recovery is significantly faster and easier than that of a liposuction treatment. This is a very well-tolerated alternative to the traditional surgical liposuction procedure.

Who Is A Candidate?

The majority of women and men interested in reducing their submental fat qualify as a candidate for a Kybella treatment. Patients should be of good health and have no underlying skin conditions that may cause confliction with the Kybella treatments. However, it is important for interested patients to keep in mind that this treatment is used to treat fat deposits, not loose skin. Dr. Hamawy can discuss further options during the consultation to correct excess skin, such as a neck lift or non-surgical laser treatments.

Men and women who are looking into Kybella treatment should be 18 years of age or older and have not had prior success diminishing their double chin through traditional means. Women who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding are not ideal candidates.

Kybella vs Other Neck Contouring Procedures

There are a few different options patients can consider when looking into chin and neck contouring treatments at Princeton Plastic Surgeons. Although Kybella provides long-term fat reduction underneath the chin, it is not the only procedure that reduces fat in this particular area. And if loose skin is a concern, there are a few surgical and non-surgical solutions we offer. Below are some of the most requested chin and neck contouring procedures.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is another non-invasive treatment similar to Kybella, but it uses cold temperature to destroy fat cells. Like Kybella though, the destroyed fat cells will be removed from the body through a natural elimination process. CoolSculpting has a special applicator designed specifically for the area underneath the chin. This allows for more accurate treatment, and we are proud to offer it here at Princeton Plastic Surgeons.

Laser-Assisted Or Power-Assisted Liposuction

Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that removes fat from a particular area with powerful precise suction. In this case, liposuction can be used under the chin to sculpt and contour the jawline and neck to reduce the appearance of a double chin. Liposuction does require small incisions and downtime, but results can be enjoyed quickly after treatment because the fat cells are physically being removed.

Neck Lift

A neck lift is another surgical procedure that we offer to help improve chin and neck contour. However, the main purpose of a neck lift is to remove lax skin, tighten the neck muscles and reposition tissue to improve chin, neck, and jawline contour. A neck lift can be combined with a fat reduction procedure for comprehensive results. It is actually commonly performed with fat reduction procedures since they often do not address skin laxity.

Consultation

Women and men are required to come in for an initial consultation and meet with Dr. Hamawy before receiving Kybella injections. During the consultation, you will have the opportunity to express your concerns regarding the appearance of your chin and neck and what your desired outcomes are. The doctor will then review medical history and current medications to make sure nothing will conflict with the ingredients in Kybella. Next, the doctor will perform an examination in order to determine if you would benefit from Kybella injections or if you are better suited for an alternative procedure like a neck lift. On a case by case basis, he will determine the best course of action for each individual.

Once candidacy is determined, Dr. Hamawy will review the treatment in its entirety, making sure to review realistic results you can expect; he will provide before and after photos of previous patients as an example. It is possible for the Kybella treatment to be performed on the same day as the consultation with the doctor’s approval.

Kybella is a ground-breaking new way to get rid of double chin fat for good. How To Treat A Double Chin

Prior to beginning the Kybella treatment, Dr. Hamawy may apply a local anesthetic or topical numbing agent to the treatment area. He will then mark the area with a special grid and series of precisely placed dots that will be used as the points of injection. Each treatment includes multiple injections of the synthetic deoxycholic acid to cover the entire “double-chin” area. The treatment takes about 15-20 minutes from beginning to end. Once completed, the doctor will go over recovery protocol. However, if you have any further questions, you are more than welcome to contact our office at any time.

Treating other areas with Kybella

Dr. Hamawy can treat other areas with Kybella. Besides the neck and chin, the most common treatments are to the bra / underarm fat area, around the knees or as a cellulite reduction method. The area is marked in a similar fashion with a special grid as a template and guideline for injection. Each Kybella treatment takes about 15-20 minutes and most people need two treatments 6-8 weeks apart for optimal results.

Recovery

Patients who receive Kybella injections have been very satisfied with their results. Because Kybella destroys the fat cells, it helps prevent fat from building up in this region in the future. After treatment, patients may experience mild swelling, bruising, and slight discomfort throughout the healing process; these symptoms are normal after treatment. Patients will see improved results after each appointment as the cells are expelled from the body through a natural elimination process.

Results

With Kybella, the results speak for themselves. We do ask of those who choose this course of treatment to practice patience when waiting for final results because it does take a few months to be fully apparent as the body naturally expels the destroyed cells. Once expelled though, results are long-lasting. Again, Kybella does not address skin laxity; this will have to be addressed with an additional procedure and it’s not a replacement for maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a nutritious diet and regular exercise.

Here at Princeton Plastic Surgeons, we are dedicated to helping our patients reach their aesthetic goals! Contact our office today and schedule a consultation; it is the first step to the new you!
